Who We’re Fighting For
FIGHTING TO END MODERN-DAY SLAVERY: Gopinath’s* family is now free, after being enslaved in a rock quarry for 15 years. They were rescued through an IJM operation in collaboration with local authorities. He recently told IJM staff, “All the struggles that I’ve faced in life seem to be small, when I think of my big future.”
FIGHTING TO PROTECT WIDOWS AND ORPHANS: Vincent and his family are now safe in their home. Powerful members of his community attempted to steal their house after his father’s death, but an IJM attorney stood up for their rights.
The victims of this violence are overwhelmingly the world’s poorest people – because 4 billion of the world’s poor aren’t protected by their countries’ laws against violent oppression.
IJM’s staff work around the world to rescue victims of aggressive violence like slavery, sex trafficking, illegal detention, rape and illegal property seizure – and protect entire communities from these types of oppression by ensuring that laws, police and courts serve the poor.
FIGHTING TO STOP SEX TRAFFICKING: Traffickers attempted to sell Jayashri* into a life of forced prostitution. But instead, she was rescued by local police and IJM operatives before ever being abused. Now, she’s getting an education at an aftercare home, and her perpetrators have been convicted for the crime.
But to end modern-day slavery for good, the world’s poorest people need many more voices speaking out on their behalf. Vulnerable people – and those who would abuse them – need to know that the rest of the world has not forgotten them.
