“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by the Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” This unanimous Declaration of the thirteen United States of America in 1776 was a foundational concept, which helped us to abolish slavery in our nation a century later. However, “unalienable rights endowed by the Creator” is not exclusive to the United States. It belongs to the global family of man. Wherever these rights are subjugated by another, a crime is being committed. The pandemic of human trafficking and child prostitution cry out for justice and we are God’s plan for answering that call. IJM is on the front lines of this battle and I gratefully support and join them in this fight.

It is hard, when you truly understand the plight of enslaved men, women and children around the world, to not want to physically do something – to write senators, write songs, or ride bikes – anything to draw attention to this tremendous injustice. Troy and I can’t wait to join the team for a stretch in the road as they retrace the Underground Railroad during IJM’s 5 Weeks For Freedom campaign, and to share music and stories of freedom together in Nashville. Find out if the team will be near you, and come cheer them on!

In the twenty-first century the word slavery has become a comedian’s punchline. It is summarily dismissed as part of the past. In truth, it is a harsh reality for far too many people worldwide. By supporting 5 Weeks for Freedom and IJM, we can create real, lasting change for our children’s future.

We live in a world where the term ’slavery’ is often considered irrelevant. Sadly this isn’t the case. I’m honored to associate myself with IJM and the incredible work they are doing for people who are being exploited, abused, and enslaved and have no means of escape. A hand that offers freedom is a hand that offers hope and I believe that the human spirit thrives on both. Those two things can change everything.

I am enraged to think of children being abducted and forced to work as prostitutes, yet that is the painful reality for too many. The world is crying for justice and I am grateful that IJM is on the front lines, doing the methodical, meticulous work that must be done to bring justice for those without a voice.

LEADING VOICES :: Secretary Jim Nicholson

Combating the illegal trade of human trafficking has been a leading priority of the U.S. government for years now. A key strategy in this fight has been to build public justice systems so that they can protect the vulnerable – the global poor, children and women – who so often are the victims of this heinous crime. International Justice Mission has been on the frontlines of this battle for more than a decade now, and has been behind real results that have changed real lives. I’m proud to support their work around the globe and their 5 Weeks for Freedom campaign.

LEADING VOICES :: Mark Shapiro

Mark Shapiro

The Cleveland Indians organization is proud to support the work of International Justice Mission (IJM) and its 5 Weeks for Freedom bike tour to bring an end to modern-day slavery. Like IJM, the Cleveland Indians have long been on the frontlines of breaking down barriers. We are pleased to be able to help bring attention to, and garner support for IJM in its fight to promote justice for all. It is clearly a victory worth fighting for.

When I was a little boy, I saw a lot bad things happening to people during the Rwandan genocide– people being killed, children losing their families, and later thousands of orphans on the streets. When I move around the world today, I see that injustice still exists. IJM brings hope to those in need, which is why I am honored to support 5 weeks for freedom.

In a world of bad news, it’s a natural human reaction to be captivated by heroism… to be inspired by it… to want to see it spread. The work of International Justice Mission accurately represents the truest form of heroism in the world today. We are blessed and humbled to call ourselves fellow abolitionists with IJM.
