Birmingham, AL – Recap

IJM & Venture Expeditions’ Injustice: 5 Weeks for Freedom campaign stopped this Friday for a fun-filled advocacy event at Workplay in Birmingham, AL. More than 150 supporters came out to the event, which featured the 5 Weeks for Freedom riders and musical performances by Alabama bluegrass favorite The Resonators, Duquette Johnston and Great Book of John.

Attendees also had the opportunity to hear from Alabama Representatives Jack Williams and Merika Coleman, Freedom to Thrive Director Sarah Jane Camacho and Assistant Director of The District Attorney’s Association Barry Matson. The group shared exciting progress in Alabama’s fight against human trafficking—thanks to new legislation they worked to pass that criminalizes human trafficking activities in the state. IJM’s Sean Litton shared stories of rescue and hope from around the world—and simple steps that everyone can take to make rescue possible for the more than 27 million people enslaved today.

The evening concluded with a screening of star-studded “rockumentary” Call+Response—which shines a real but hopeful spotlight on the crisis of modern-day slavery and sex trafficking. Special thanks to Sarah Jane Camacho (lead event volunteer), all of our special guests, Workplay and Taziki’s Mediterranean Café for their support.

The next major city stop on the tour is in Nashville, TN with events on July 9, 10 and 11. Follow the 5 Weeks for Freedom campaign—including live GPS tracking from the bikes, a behind-the-scenes reality series, daily video blogs featuring the riders and more at www.5WeeksforFreedom.org.

Enjoyed your visit to Southside Baptist in BHAM. Here are the links to Underground Railroad re-enactments that I was telling one of your riders about. It’s a nice tie in to your ride if you can do it.
