I’m riding for girls like Masuzyo.* At six years old, she was raped by her neighbor in Lusaka, Zambia. Her parents pressed charges, but the case didn’t move forward – the justice system just didn’t function the way it should to protect her. According to the U.N., 4 billion people aren’t adequately protected by their own justice systems. Masuzyo’s perpetrator was convicted for his crime and is in jail now, because an IJM attorney took the case to court for the family. But I want to know that other little girls won’t be victims of the same abuse – that they’ll be protected by their countries’ own laws, free to grow up in safety and security – and that’s why I’m giving Five Weeks for Freedom.
